How can I prevent myself from getting a UTI?
Hygiene
-Always wipe from front to back! Never wipe from back to front because germs from the rectum will transfer to the front.
-Take showers instead of baths. Sitting in a bath for a long time exposes the bladder to more bacteria.
-Tampons are recommended over pads or napkins. They keep the bladder area drier which reduces bacterial growth.
-Try to empty the bladder about every 4 hours a day. Holding urine in, especially when you feel the urge to go, is one of the leading causes of UTI's.
Clothing
-Cotton underwear recommended! Tight fitted under garments are usually less breathable. Leaves room for microbial growth.
Diet
-Drink more water!
-Cranberry juice and cranberry pills may reduce the chances of developing a UTI as well.
Activities
-Such as sexual intercourse increase the likelihood of developing a UTI. Necessary precautions to reducing the chance include peeing after intercourse, showering, and drinking a few glasses of water.
